Ntombifuthi Ncwayiba's dedication to preserving local language births new book #FridayFeeling

Ntombifuthi Ncwayiba's unwavering commitment to safeguarding and promoting the Isimpondo language inspires admiration. In a world where marginalized languages frequently face disdain and neglect, her efforts serve as a radiant symbol of resilience and pride.

Ncwayiba's passion for her native tongue radiates through her eloquent words: "Authoring an Isimpondo book was effortless for me because I adore my mother tongue." This love permeates every page of her literary creations, where she spins narratives that extol the richness and elegance of Isimpondo.

Through her storytelling, Ncwayiba aspires to dismantle biases and dispel misconceptions about Isimpondo speakers. She firmly believes that education and understanding are crucial for altering perspectives: "The book will enlighten individuals about Isimpondo and its irrelevance to educational attainment."

For Isimpondo speaker Namhla Kaleni, Ncwayiba's works represent a source of affirmation and empowerment. She expresses her gratitude: "I am overjoyed that she has penned Isimpondo books. There is no anguish greater than being subjected to mockery for speaking Isimpondo." Ncwayiba's endeavors transcend mere storytelling; they seek to reclaim the dignity and esteem of a language and its speakers.

Nombuso Dyantyi's personal journey of self-acceptance and pride in her heritage mirrors the transforming influence of Ncwayiba's literary endeavors. She remarks, "The book is a valuable contribution for all." In embracing her lineage and language, Dyantyi echoes the widespread sentiment that Ncwayiba's work is a precious gift to those who have ever felt excluded or ashamed of their linguistic identity.

The CANEX Book Factory, a partnership between the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and Narrative Landscape Press, proudly announces the launch of the CANEX Prize for Publishing in Africa. This prestigious award aims to recognize and empower the vibrant literary landscape across the African continent.

Afreximbank, recognizing the significance of the creative and cultural industries, initiated the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme in 2020. Within this framework, the CANEX Book Factory seeks to promote a thriving literary culture in Africa and foster a sustainable business ecosystem in the literary sector.

The inaugural CANEX Prize will honor the publisher of the best trade book, defined as literature intended for a general audience, excluding textbooks and academic publications. The prize carries a grand value of US$20,000, while four finalists will each receive US$2,000.

To ensure a comprehensive and equitable evaluation process, submissions will be assessed based on writing, editing, and production quality. Furthermore, priority will be given to books printed and produced on the African continent, as well as those published in indigenous African languages.

The inaugural year of the prize will consider books published in the preceding two years, providing an opportunity for a wide range of African publishers to participate.

Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President at Afreximbank, expressed the organization's commitment to fostering Africa's creative industries. "The CANEX Prize is a testament to our belief in the power of African literature to shape cultural identity and enrich communities."

Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who will lead the CANEX workshops, emphasized the transformative impact of literary support. "CANEX embodies hope for aspiring African writers, inspiring them to pursue their dreams surrounded by like-minded individuals."

Publishers are encouraged to submit their published trade books for consideration. Submissions must be made through the CANEX Book Factory portal at https://canex.africa/canex-book-factory.

The CANEX Prize for Publishing in Africa is set to culminate in an award ceremony at the prestigious CANEX Wknd event in Algiers, Algeria, from October 16-19, 2024. This award will not only recognize literary excellence but also contribute to the growth and sustainability of the African publishing industry.

Enter the realm of the literary world at Kingsmead Book Fair

Reading takes you on adventures while sitting still, it gives us the opportunity to visit places, circumstances and eras and may evoke many emotions during the experience. Reading inspires imagination, unearths your next quest, finds you your next adventure to explore, and plots and reveals the next twist to your tale. As a school we are passionate about reading and it is so important that our students are exposed to books, authors – in particular African authors – and good reading habits. "We are excited about the authors on our programme and being able to expose the community to rich and varied topics and sessions. We hope that this year's programme provides an opportunity to engage with new authors and genres or even immerse yourself in that which you are most comfortable," says Alex Bouche, the Director of the Kingsmead Book Fair.
The diverse programme includes more than 150 authors participating in over 80 sessions throughout the day on the adult, young adult, and children's programmes.
In addition, they run their Young Writers' Competition for the third year. We received a staggering number of entries, doubling the number received last year. Encouraging a culture of reading and writing, the competition is open to all school children aged 6 – 18. Launched in 2022, the writing competition aims to provide a platform for young writers' skills and a space to explore different genres and styles with feedback from professional writers and publishers. With more than 80% of children in Grade 4 not being able to read for meaning, there is an urgent need for reading and writing to be given more attention. The competition called for aspiring young writers to submit their original short stories based on this year's topic: My Favourite Word. Prizes for the winning entry in each age group include a cash prize, book voucher and feedback from the judges. Winners will be announced in the week preceding the Book Fair.
Kingsmead Book Fair has a strong social responsibility ethos. As such, one of the aims of the Kingsmead Book Fair's outreach programme is to offer entrance and session tickets to various organisations and reading groups that otherwise might not have the means to attend. In addition, the school holds a book drive in the weeks leading up to the event where gently loved books are donated and then distributed to our various community partners.
All proceeds from the event go towards the Kingsmead Trust. There are currently 61 bright young women benefiting from an excellent education in the Senior School. The bursaries constitute 100% of their school fees, uniforms, daily lunch and tour subsidies.
We invite you to enter the realm of the literary world with us on 25 May and enjoy in-depth discussion and heated debate mixed with some exceptional company, good food and drink, not to mention buying your next book at the Exclusive Books pop-up.
Situated in the hub of Johannesburg's business centre with convenient transport links, Kingsmead College is ideally positioned to draw people from nearby towns and suburbs. The school has fantastic venues in which to hold the sessions, all within close proximity of each other. All in all, it is a day on South Africa's literary calendar that is not to be missed. Tickets on sale via Webtickets.

Poet Naahid Nakidien who started writing poetry in Dubai launches her first book in Cape Town #FridayFeeling

Naahid Nakidien, a multi-talented Surrey Estate resident, is set to launch her debut poetry collection, "Gifts from a Whispering Soul: A Poetic Journey of Transformation," on Saturday at the Bo-Kaap Cultural Hub. This event marks a significant milestone for Nakidien, who wears many hats as a registered life coach, nursing sister, arts producer, and co-founder of O'dacity Films.

The book delves into themes of personal growth and empowerment, reflecting on Nakidien's multifaceted journey as a coach, poet, and artist. Her passion for poetry blossomed in 2004 while residing in Dubai, and although the idea of a book had been brewing for years, she finally found the courage to begin writing in November 2023.

"As a life coach, I've always used poetry as metaphors and drawn inspiration from my own poems to motivate clients," Nakidien explained. "The book felt like a natural progression, but there was also a lot of encouragement from clients, family, and friends to share my work with the world."

"Gifts from a Whispering Soul" invites readers into Nakidien's introspective exploration of her identity as a Muslim woman navigating a patriarchal society. "I hope it inspires others to delve into their own lives and embark on a journey of self-reflection, healing, and discovering their purpose," she shared.

Fatima Samsodien, office administrator at the Bo-Kaap Cultural Hub, expressed her pride in providing a platform for local self-published authors like Nakidien. The book will be available for purchase at the launch for R250, and also on Takealot and Amazon, offering a wider audience access to Nakidien's evocative poems and insightful reflections.

Signed copies can be ordered via WhatsApp on 084 661 7693.

#BookReview: From Baltimore to Billionaire - GoDaddy Founder Shares Inspiring Journey in New Book

Billionaire philanthropist Bob Parsons, founder of GoDaddy and PXG Golf (among other successful businesses), shares his rags-to-riches story and the invaluable life lessons he learned along the way in his inspiring literary debut Fire in the Hole!
Growing Up in Blue-Collar Baltimore
As a young boy in a blue-collar East Baltimore household in the 1950s, Parsons grew up in a financially insecure environment due to his parents' inveterate gambling habits. Not only was money scarce, but so were displays of parental love. But this did not stop Parson from dreaming of a brighter future for himself, going as far as declaring in his high school yearbook that he would be a millionaire one day while at the time "flunking almost every class."
Military Service and Life Lessons
Remarkably open about his family problems — especially with his mother, Elsie, who had periodic mental breakdowns that traumatized him — Parsons does not make excuses for his upbringing and its limitations. If anything, they were fuel for his ambitions as a man, husband, and father. During a terrifying episode when his mother went "berserk," Parsons recalls the vow he made before God:
"I must have been nine years old … and I retreated to my basement bedroom, where I dropped to my knees and prayed to God. I was as serious as I ever was. I didn't ask for a way out of my situation. Instead I said, Dear God, when I grow up, if I have a family, I promise they will always have whatever they need. I never broke that promise."
From Basement Startup to Billionaire
Parsons moves through his early memories in a down-to-earth, no-B.S. way that should resonate with readers. His decision to join the U.S. Marines out of high school to fight in Vietnam would have profound impacts on him, with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) the stalking horse that haunted his future and personal relationships. But despite that, Parsons points to his service in the Marines as "the first really positive thing" he did with his life. He would take the lessons learned about duty, responsibility, and making good on your promises to heart: "To this day, everything I do in business stems from these lessons."
Parsons chronicles his early jobs, going to school for an accounting degree, and meeting his first wife, Martha. As a new husband and father, Parsons was constantly working, holding down a successful full-time job while also starting his own business, Parsons Technology, in his basement. With his head for numbers and writing programming language, Parsons says he "felt that [he] was going places — and computers were the highways that would take [him] there."
A chronicle of bold business decisions based on sharp instincts, Fire in the Hole! offers sound advice for entrepreneurs in a jocular, everyday Joe voice. Parsons' stories of standing up Parsons Technology, GoDaddy, PXG Golf, and others are a master class for the next generation of business creators.
An Unapologetic Philanthropist
When it comes to his wealth, Parsons does not apologize for his assets, asserting that his two billion dollars also came with $900 million in income taxes, which he cheerfully paid "despite the fact that I never received a thank-you note." But Parsons does not hoard his assets, either. A noted philanthropist, he and his wife created the Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation in 2012. The foundation focuses on low-income and underserved communities overlooked by "mainstream philanthropy." In 2023, the Foundation gave away $26.6 million and awarded 32 grants to 23 partners.
Not all a business how-to, the book's beating heart is Parsons's raw assessment of his closest relationships throughout his life. Owning up to his failings, Parsons speaks honestly about his attempts to reconnect with his children, which rings true. The reader can only cheer him on! Fire in the Hole! is an entertaining and versatile memoir with high appeal for business and golf aficionados, but also for people who just love a great American success story.

Charmza Literary Club to host Thaba Nchu Book Festival to celebrate local authors and poets #CharmzaKolwaneMrwebi

The upcoming Thaba Nchu Book Festival, organized by the Charmza Literary Club, is set to showcase and celebrate local authors and promote a culture of literacy and reading in the community.

Scheduled to take place from 9 to 11 May, the festival aims to highlight the importance of books in fostering human development, preserving history, and encouraging a love for reading.

The festival will feature a range of activities at various venues, aligning with the commemoration of Africa Month in May, leading up to Africa Day on 25 May. Renowned publisher, poet, and thought leader, Dr. Maboreng Maharaswa, will serve as the guest speaker at the official opening on 9 May, emphasizing the celebration of African authors.

Charmaine Mrwebi, the festival organizer, expressed her dedication to giving back to the community and establishing partnerships with local stakeholders. As a successful publisher and author herself, she has been instrumental in promoting African literature and literacy, particularly through books written in the indigenous African language of Tswana.

The festival will provide a platform for both emerging and established publishers and authors to share their experiences and knowledge. Activities will include engaging reading sessions, book donations, and collaborations with educators to introduce enjoyable reading programs for students. The Thaba Nchu Book Festival promises to be a dynamic event that celebrates the power of literature and storytelling in advancing societal development and cultural appreciation.

Inspirational lady creates opportunities for South African freelancers to work remotely for overseas companies #WorkersDay

Di Luden, a Gqeberha resident with a heart firmly rooted in the Eastern Cape, has taken her international experience and channeled it into creating opportunities for South Africans to work remotely for overseas companies.  After a successful career on super-yachts, Luden co-founded Ubuntu Freelancers, a platform connecting South African talent with global clients.

Luden's journey began with a desire for a more settled lifestyle after years of globetrotting as a purser on luxury yachts.  "I never imagined moving back to the Eastern Cape," she admitted, "but life has a funny way of choosing a path for you." The COVID-19 pandemic provided the catalyst for change, prompting Luden to explore remote work options.

Inspired by a friend who was successfully working remotely for US clients, Luden secured her own international client and relished the flexibility and international exposure it offered.  "I absolutely loved that I was still getting an international taste while living in Gqeberha," she shared.

The seed for Ubuntu Freelancers was planted during a casual conversation with her cousin.  Luden's belief in the potential of South African talent, combined with the increasing demand for remote work, led them to explore the idea further.  "We are naturally hardworking, diligent people," she remarked, confident in the abilities of her fellow South Africans.

In November 2021, Ubuntu Freelancers was born, aiming to bridge the gap between South African freelancers and international clients seeking skilled professionals.  Luden's venture exemplifies the spirit of Ubuntu, harnessing the power of community and collaboration to create opportunities that transcend borders.
