Language crosses borders - Days of African Literature Festival to be held in Austria

The vibrant world of African literature takes center stage in Graz, Austria, with the "Days of African Literature Festival" taking place from June 14-15, 2024.  Hosted by the Chiala Association, a group dedicated to promoting cultural diversity and development, the festival embraces the theme "Language crosses borders," shining a spotlight on the crucial role of translation in bridging literary divides.

"We believe that literature has the power to transcend boundaries and connect people from different cultures," says a representative from the Chiala Association, which has a rich history of organizing impactful events like the CHIALA Africa Festival in 2022. "Through this festival, we aim to showcase the richness and diversity of African literature to a wider audience."

The festival, held at the Kulturzentrum der Minoriten Graz, promises a captivating program featuring readings, panel discussions, and interactive workshops.  Attendees can experience the work of acclaimed authors like Babeth Fonchie Fotchind, Ernis, Andrea Färber, Max Lobe, Niq Mhlongo, Sami Tchak, Tete Loeper, and Zina Eberlein, all expertly curated by Rémi Armand Tchokothe.

Readings will be brought to life through captivating performances by Julia Kölbl, who will translate the authors' words for the audience, and Ninja Reichert, who will enchant attendees with readings of the German translations.  A highlight of the festival is a dedicated translating/interpreting workshop led by Ida Hadjivayanis, providing valuable insights into the art of bridging linguistic gaps.

"Translation is more than just words; it's about conveying emotions, cultural nuances, and the soul of a story,"  says Julia Kölbl, adding  "We hope this festival inspires a deeper appreciation for the power of language and its ability to connect us all."
